National Novel Writing Month

November is National Novel Writing Month. I've posted about this before, but National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, is an event in which writers sign up to write 50,000 in the month of November. That breaks down to 1,667 words a day. Which doesn't seem like a lot. Until around day 17. Then its a lot of words.

I've been a part of NaNoWriMo since 2011, my first year (which I won, by the way). I have also done a few Camp NaNoWriMos, which are held over the summer. I love NaNoWriMo. The entire month of November is dedicated to writing, nothing else. Just getting work done. For me, forcing myself to write like this can be incredibly helpful. Especially when other people know I am participating and can hold me accountable.

For other people, NaNoWriMo just doesn't work out. They are too busy or don't work well that way. And that's fine. I usually don't write with set deadlines, only rough estimates of when I would like things to be finished. NaNo is the only time of the year were I have hard deadlines. And even when I win and write 50K words, that is rarely the end of the novel, so its not exactly a perfect system.

This year, I'm working on a story I have actually written, in part, before. I'm changing the plot a bit and working out some parts, so its going to be different, but hopefully easier than starting a whole new story. We'll see how it goes.
